New Delhi, Aug 26 : Chief Justice of India-designated, Justice U.U.Lalit last Friday, announced three reforms he plans to implement during his term.In his remarks at the farewell celebration of Chief Justice N.V.Ramana organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Lalit said he will make the list of cases transparent and clear, as well as a clear system to mention urgent issues before the respective benches, and one Constitution bench that is in operation all year.
He stated in the list of issues that are before the Constitution benches and other matters that are specifically referred to three judges, “I have always believed that the function of the Supreme Court is to lay the law with clarity. The most effective way to accomplish this is to have a larger bench so that the issues are resolved quickly.
“So that people are aware of the specifics of particular legal positions of law.We will work hard to have at a minimum one Constitution bench operating through the year.”
He highlighted two significant achievements of Chief Justice Ramana — one that was the elimination of judge vacancies, and the second that was the attention given to issues pertaining to the judicial infrastructure. He said that over 200 appointments of judges of various high courts were made during CJI Ramana’s term and during the Chief Ministers and Chief Judges’ conference in the conference, the CJI extremely and forcefully attempted to convince everyone to focus on issues related to infrastructure in the lower judiciary and it was quite remarkable.
“The outcomes of the conference are being felt right now.as the chairperson of NALSA (National Legal Services Authority) one of the initiatives we’re looking to implement is an office of public defenders or legal aid defence counsel” he said.
