New York, Sep 2 : India’s participation in the US Open 2022 tennis tournament ended early , as Rohan Bopanna and Ramkumar Ramanathan both made early exits from the last Grand Slam of the year.Bopanna was a player in both mixed and men’s doubles, was eliminated from both of his first round matches on Thursday night.
In the doubles for men Bopanna, who is 42 years old Bopanna as well as his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop who was seeded 9th in the competition, fell against the seeded Italian team of Andrea Vavassori and Lorenzo Sonego 6-7(2) 2-6.
The experienced Indian tennis player who took home the French Open Grand Slam mixed doubles title in 2017, teamed with with China’s Yang Zhaoxuan.The sixth-seeded Indo-Chinese team lost 5-7, 5-7 to the Australian duo of Max Purcell and Gabriela Dabrowski who are two-time mixed-doubles Grand Slam champion.
On the other side, Ramkumar Ramanathan and his Serbian partner Nikola Cacic were outplayed 4-6 and 4-6 by the Italian team of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini 15th seed in the doubles for men.
The 27-year-old Ramkumar was also involved in the qualifying rounds for men’s singles of the US Open but failed to be able to play in the main draw, after losing 3-6, 5-7 , to the USA’s Bruno Kuzuhara.Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri also did not get beyond the qualifying stages.
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza was scheduled to play in the US Open but pulled out at the last minute due to an injury.
