Shehbaz Sharif cancels UK visit as Pak declares floods as national emergency

Islamabad 25 August : The Pakistan government has declared the floods in the country as a national emergency’, and has asked for donations to aid in the rehabilitation of the flood-affected populations according to media reports.
For his part the Premier Shehbaz Sharif has canceled his trip to the United Kingdom and is heading back to Qatar to lead a meeting to discuss flood relief initiatives, Samaa TV reported.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb described the situation of flooding in the country an emergency of national significance.

The minister stated that the nation’s spirit is needed to deal with the destruction due to the floods in Balochistan as well as Sindh.

She made an appeal to the entire country including foreign Pakistanis to donate to the rehabilitation of flood victims since an enormous amount of money is needed with in view the huge scale destruction, Samaa TV reported.

The Prime Minister has cancelled his trip to the UK.He was set to depart to London in Qatar to inquire about his granddaughter, who is receiving treatment in Qatar, Samaa TV reported.

When he arrives, Sharif will chair a meeting at which all the relevant authorities including the National Disaster Management Authority, will inform him of the steps taken to aid in the rescue and relief of flood victims.
