New York, Aug 12 : Author and controversial Salman Rushdie, whose ‘The Satanic Verses’ prompted threats of death against him for the word blasphemy, was beaten when he was taking part in an event in New York state, media reports claimed.His condition is not known.
Indian-born Rushdie 75, from India was speaking at an event of the Chautauqua Institution when a man was seen running onto the stage and struck or stabbed him the BBC reported, citing eyewitnesses.
Based on reports, in the midst of screams of shock by the crowd, a few were on stage and were able to stop the attacker while others came to the assistance of the person who was laying upon the stage.
