New Delhi, Aug 8 : A staggering 85 percent of Indian children were victims of cyberbullying more than twice the global average in a study published released on Monday.
McAfee’s Cyberbullying Report found that 42 percent of Indian youngsters have been victims of racist cyberbullying shockingly 14 percent more than the rest of the world, with 28 percent.

Extreme types of cyberbullying that are not racist include trolling (36 percent) personal attacks (29 percent) sexual harassment (30 percent) as well as threats of personal injury (28 percent) as well as doing doxing (publishing personal information with no consent, 23 percent) All of them at nearly twice the rate of the average for all countries.

Girls in the teen years in India also had some of the most severe rates of sexual harassment in the world, with girls 10 to 14 at 32 percent and girls aged 15 to 16 at 34 per cent.

They also ranked as one of the highest rates worldwide to be in danger of personal injury, with teens aged 10-14 registering at 32 percent and girls between 15 and 16 at 34 percent.However, the percentage fell significantly from the age of 17-18, down to 21 percent.

Indian children reported cyberbullying as high as to 1.5 times more often than youngsters in other countries on fourteen studied platforms, ranging between Facebook and Instagram to Snapchat and WhatsApp.

India also reported a number of prominent instances of cyberbullying like spreading false reports at 39 percent and being excluded from group discussions and having conversations at 35 per cent , and name calling at 34 percent.

About 45 percent of Indian children have said that they keep their cyberbullying stories from their parents, possibly due to the absence of conversations.

“Cyberbullying in India reaches alarming levels with more than one in three children face sexual harassment, cyber-bullying as well as the threat of physical harm from the age of 10 -which makes India the most popular nation with the highest rate of cyberbullying reported in the world,” said Gagan Singh Chief Product Officer of McAfee, in a statement.

“Parents are showing significant gaps of knowledge regarding cyberbullying.

But more troubling is that children aren’t focusing on behaviours like jokes or name-calling that can be dangerous on the internet,” he added.

The study is based upon a 10-country survey conducted between June 15 and July 5.

In all, 11,687 parents and their kids took part in an email survey from countries such as India and the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and Mexico.
