According to the statement, the Mahotsav would also recognize the top performers under the earlier launched ‘Safaimitra Suaksha Challenge’ by the Ministry.

Over 3,000 Urban Local Bodies in India (ULBs), have declared a ban on plastic bags that are not biodegradable.

The ministry says that the success of SS is measured by the extraordinary amount of feedback from citizens received in this year. This represents a significant increase on last year’s 1.87 million.

In 2021, 4,320 cities participated in the survey, up from 73 in 2016.

According to the ministry, six States and six Union Territories have seen an overall improvement in ground performance (ranging from five to 25%) over the last year.More than 1,100 new cities started source segregation while nearly 1,800 ULBs extended welfare benefits to sanitation workers.

More than 1 500 ULBs have also notified that there is a ban on non-biodegradable bags being used, sold, and stored. In total, more than 3000 ULBs are aware of this ban.The ministry stated that all northeastern countries have seen significant improvements in citizens’ feedback. This is yet another testament to the Mission reaching out to everyone, even those in remote areas.

Only 56 cities received certification based on a star rating in 2018.

The number of cities has increased to 342 this year (with 9 five-star, 166 three and 167 one star cities).

Swachh Bharat Mission Urban (SBM-U 2.0), launched October 1, this year, will ensure that everyone has access to clean water.
