Meditation apps drop off the edge as normal life returns

New Delhi, Aug 20 : Meditation apps that drew millions of users during the height of the pandemic are now losing popularity and the combined sessions of the top 10 meditation apps has dropped 48 percent from their peak in the second quarter of 2020.
Numerous companies had promoted meditation applications as a way to combat mental health issues that people faced in the epidemic.

The sessions of users of Calm and Headspace meditation apps dropped 26.4 percent and 60.3 percent (year-on-year) in July, according to research company Apptopia.

Calm has announced that it is cutting 20 percent of its employees.

The top two apps for meditation have seen an upward trend in engagement indicators since January 2021.

The leading meditation apps are showing declining trends in participation with the exception of BetterMe: Mental Health and Breethe.

On average, applications in this category are seeing usage falling by 30 percent over the last 90 days.

But, Calm and Headspace were still able to boost the revenue over the previous year in the second quarter.

“Part of the reason engagement is declining may not be due to the fact that people don’t desire to meditate, but that they feel they don’t have enough time to do it after a ‘normal’ lifestyle has returned,” according to the report.
