London 20th August : Covid-19-related cases in Britain have dropped to their lowest levels in 2 months, providing an additional sign that the current outbreak of the disease is declining.The figures reveal.

The current outbreak has been caused by Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the virus.It saw weekly cases rise to 3.8 million in the first week of July.

It was not as severe as the record of 4.9 million infections recorded at the height of the Omicron BA.2 wave in late March, however.

About 1.4 million residents in England could have been positive for Covid-19 in the most recent week of the survey, which is the equivalent of approximately one in 40 of them, the ONS stated.

This is an improvement from 2.1 million which is one in 25 in the latter part of July.

In Wales the number of infections was 72,600 in the week leading up to August 8, which is one in 40 people in comparison with 108,800 or one in 30 in the previous study.

The most recent estimate of positive test results in Scotland is 164,100 roughly one in 30 people, less than the 260,800 in the last week of July, which is one in 20.

In Northern Ireland infections were estimated to be 36,600 in the week leading up to August 8, which is one in 50 people.This is down dramatically from 109,800, or one in 17.

The fall booster campaign is scheduled to start in England in the week of September 5th, when NHS staff will begin vaccinating residents of care homes and those who live in their homes.

An online booking service for national customers will be be available during that week, allowing over-75s and those who are at risk of serious illness to make an appointment.
