New Delhi, December 14th : .A transgender man was one of organizers for the People’s Climate March (KBT), which took place in Karachi under the banners of Karachi Bachao Tehreek.
On Sunday night, some people tried to extract information from the march.Dawn reports that they tortured and assaulted him.KBT, a campaign to end the destruction of Karachi’s working class settlements and market’s, reported the incident via tweet.It claimed that one of Karachi’s members of the People’s Climate March organizing committee was picked up by KBT and subjected torture and rape the night of 12/12.
We organized a People’s Climate March to Karachi.We held an organizing committee meeting the night before we protest.A trans woman was one of the organisers.She was on her way back home when she was kidnapped.
In a tweet, the KBT stated that she was tortured to death and raped.
The report suggested that police officers were involved in violence against transgender people and sought to obtain information from members about the march.
“It is worth noting that this police violence was disproportionately directed towards a trans woman – that sexual violence was weaponised against one of the most vulnerable members of the organising team, so that information about the march and its programme could be extorted from her,” it added.
Shahzadi Rai, the Gender Interactive Alliance’s (GIA) ‘violence case manager’, told Dawn that the KBT activist “was picked up on her way to home near the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and was kept in illegal custody for three hours where she was tortured and raped before being released near the matric board office in Nazimabad”.
