After several members of the ruling coalition pulled support for their chief minister in the state assembly, the election became a state vote. The dissolution was achieved on October 5.

BN, the ruling party in Malaysia since 1957 independence, was defeated in 2018 by Pakatan Harapan (PH), who won the election in both the national and the state elections.

After the 2020 collapse of the PH coalition headed by Mahathir Mohamad, BN made a return after partnering up with a few defectors to PH in a government under former prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin is the head of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.(PPBM).

He resigned in August 16 and was succeeded by Ismail Sabri Yaakob UMNO vice president, who was sworn into office on August 21.

Tensions among PPBM, BN saw the federal allies competing against one another at the state level alongside the main opposition coalition PH.This led to multi-cornered fights for all seats in the state assembly with minor parties as well as independents contesting.

This election was seen as a demonstration of the ability of the UMNO-led BN to go solo in future national elections, which will be held before or on July 2023.
