Santiago 22 Nov : , The runoff between the top two presidential candidates in Chile’s first round is scheduled because they did not receive over 50% of required votes.The preliminary results of Sunday’s election by Chile’s Electoral Service showed that Jose Antonio Kast of Republican Party received 28.06 percent of votes.Gabriel Boric of Approve Dignity bloc got 25.5 percent, according to Xinhua news agency.
More than 86% of ballots in case of an earlier election have been counted.
The winner of the second round will be given a 4-year term, starting in 2022, to manage a country that has been hit hard by inflation, Covid-19 pandemic and unrest.
Apart from these two candidates, Franco Parisi, of People’s Party, won 13.07 percent of the vote and Sebastian Sichel, 12.52 percent.
Voting centers reported high turnout throughout day, in spite of high temperatures and long waiting times.
On Sunday, deputies, senators and regional councillors will be elected.
Sebastian Pinera, the incumbent President, had asked citizens to vote with conviction.He acknowledged that they are in tough times but that united we can overcome these difficulties and get on our way.
