This has allowed local bodies in keeping the funeral expenses free of cost to the general public.

The new plan is to change crematoriums to LT IIA category, which will result in per unit of electricity consumed at eight rupees and fixed charges of 200 rupees.

This will raise the cost of power by three times over the current rate.

Tangedco officials have told IANS that the main reason for the switch of the crematoriums that are electric to LT-II A is the fact that the crematoriums in Tamil Nadu are leased out to private parties.

The proposed revision of the tariff for power could be another reason for crematorium operators to extort money from the families of the deceased.

Manivarnan, a social activist, speaking to IANS said: “There is no meaning to increase the commercial value of funeral services. Many organizations and societies are keeping electric crematoriums for the purpose of providing a service and the increase in the cost of power by three times could result in them resigning of this service that is voluntary.Tangedco must keep the rates of electric crematoriums in the current place of under the slab category for homes.”
