Chennai, 28 December : .The traditional Tamil Nadu yellow cloth bag that was a symbol for businessmen as well as ordinary citizens is seeing a significant revival.M.K., Chief Minister Stalin launched the scheme “Meendum Manjappai” to reduce plastic bag use and promote cloth bags.
With orders flooding in from both wholesale and retail trade across the state, Pudukottai’s cloth bag-making units, Kancheepuram and Salem have seen a renaissance.
Many state programmes, events and shops have started using cloth bags as an alternative to plastic bags.
Rajeswari is a Coimbatore woman entrepreneur who started cloth bag manufacturing in 2000.She spoke to IANS and said that although business was struggling since its beginning, the Chief Minister’s announcement has helped things improve.”I have received several orders from Coimbatore wholesalers as well as the retail market.It is not clear how I will meet the demand.I may add one to two additional units.This will be good for the environment and the end of the throw culture that was never supported by Tamils.
Major cloth shops and major textile manufacturers are shifting to cloth and/or jute bags over plastic bags.
Nallathambi Venlayudhan is the head of a jute-bag-making facility in Erode.He spoke to IANS and said that the Chief Minister’s announcement was well received by society.
The orders we get from unanticipated quarters are a clear indication to this.Tamil Nadu is seeing a shift in the direction of cloth and Jute bags.
We believe this is important both for conservation and for the promotion of cloth and paper bags.
The government has also brought in several non-governmental organizations to raise awareness about cloth and jute bags.
S.Santosh is the head of the Environment department at Centre for Policy and Development Studies.He spoke to IANS and said that they had already held three rounds with the state’s environment department and would soon launch a campaign against plastic bags and the dangers it poses for the environment.
