South Africa reported the Omicron variant to WHO for the first time last week.Omicron infection has been confirmed in several countries and regions.

Xinhua news agency reported that dozens of countries have tightened travel regulations and even suspended flights.

On Tuesday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, thanked Botswana (and South Africa) for quickly reporting the Omicron variant.

He said that it was deeply concerning that these countries were being penalised for doing the right thing.

He called the “blunt and blanket measures” of some member states “not evidence-based nor effective on their own.” He called on countries to adopt “rational, proportional measures of risk-reduction in accordance with international health regulations.”

The WHO advises that people who are sick or at high risk of dying from severe Covid-19 disease or other serious illnesses, such as those 60 years old or older, should delay travel plans.
