Los Angeles, Sep 2 : Danish auteur Lars von Trier is making peace with continuing his illustrious career with Parkinson’s Disease, which he was diagnosed with.
The filmmaker held an event for press and interviews with the media via Zoom to promote the Venice Film Festival, where his most recent work, MUBI and Viaplay series “The Kingdom Exodus”” was screened.
He was diagnosed about four months ago, however, he has suffered from it for longer Von Trier explained in an interview with a group of media according to Variety.
“That signifies that I didn’t live up to what I wanted to act director, since I was sick.It’s a shame for the (‘The Kingdom Exodus’) actors, but I think they did a good job,” von Trier said.
If asked by Variety on what he would do in the near future in light of his current medical health condition, von Trier replied: “I will take a moment to think about what I should do.However, I definitely would like to improve.It’s not a disease that you can eliminate, but it is possible to deal with the signs, but.”
“I simply need to become used to the fact shaking and not be embarrassed in the eyes of people.Then go on because, what else can I do?” Von Trier said.
The Kingdom Exodus, the final and third season of von Trier’s “The Kingdom series,’ held its premiere in public on Thursday evening in Venice in the presence of an enthusiastic crowd that applauded every time vonTrier’s name was mentioned in the screen or came up.
He introduced the film via the video recording and also was compared to the Italian masters of cinema who have influenced his work which includes Fellini, Rossellini, Antonioni, Pasolini, Leone and Morricone among other.Members of the cast Bodil Jorgensen Nikolaj Lie Kaas Nicolas Bro and Ida Engvoli attended the screening.
When asked what the reason was for why he decided to return to the ‘The Kingdom series,’ which had the first season in 1994 and its second in 1997 Von Trier stated: “If you compare to David Lynch, he certainly did not really have a conclusion to ‘Twin Peaks’ , but I did have an end to it every single day.Only thing that changed was the actors died.”
“(Two important characters, Ernst-Hugo who played Dr.Helmer, and Kirsten Rolffes who played Mrs.Drusse, died in 1998 and 2000, respectively.) However, I felt an duty to provide some sort of an end.”
The series follows patients and staff of the neurosurgical ward in the Copenhagen hospital.The third season of the show the sleepwalker Karen is seeking answers to the unanswered questions of the show in an effort to save the hospital from a fateful end.
After getting diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, von Trier’s outlook on the world is dark.
“I think it’s a terribly world.Two of my grandchildren are mine.
It is interesting to see they will need to fix, that we didn’t solve for them, I’m certainly not positive about it, but I believe it’s a mess” said von Trier.
“And the situation in politics is extremely difficult.We’ve been naive thinking that the democratic process will only increase and things will improve and better” Von Trier said.”It’s an unfinished business that we will leave to the next generation, not to even talk about climate change.”
