Google receives record number of users’ complaints in India in July (Lead)

New Delhi, Sep 3 : Google received a record number of user complaints – 137,657 – in July of this year in India, in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, and removed 6,894,457 pieces of negative material in India in the month.
The majority of the complaints received from Indian users were about copyright violations (135,341) While other categories included trademarks court orders graphic sexual content, circumvention, and more.

The company received 37,173 complaints by individual users through specified mechanisms in the United States in the same time frame concerning third-party content which is believed to be in violation of local laws , or rights of individuals across various Google platforms.

In June, Google had removed 1,11,493 pieces of poor content based on complaints from users.

“The complaints are made up of different types.Some complaints may be based on violations of intellectual property rights whereas others claim that they have violated of local laws that ban certain kinds of content based on grounds like defamation,” Google said in a statement.

“In addition to the reports we receive from our users, our teams also invest massively in combating harmful content on the internet and employ technology to identify and delete it from our websites,” the company said in the monthly report on compliance.

The company stated that , as part of its automated detection process it revoked 551 accounts in the country.

“We invest a lot in combating harmful content on the internet and utilize technology to identify and eliminate it from our websites.This includes using automated detection methods for certain of our products in order to stop the distribution of harmful content like child sexual abuse materials and violent extremist content” stated Google.

In conformity with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 (IT Rules), Google together with other social media platforms is required to release each month transparency reports with specifics of the complaints made by users in India and actions taken in response, as well as the removal measures taken as the result of the automated detection.

In the new IT rules 2021, large social media and digital platforms -that are with over 5 million usersare required to issue monthly reports on compliance.
