“2018 – Everyone Is A Hero,” starring Tovino Thomas, hit theaters on May 5.The film is centered around the tragic Kerala floods that claimed numerous lives. It was the first Malayalam film to surpass the 150 crore mark worldwide.

One of the main reasons the movie failed to reach the ₹200 crore mark was its early release on an OTT platform.According to film tracker Manobala Vijayabalan, the movie’s worldwide net earnings amounted to 178.25 crore throughout its run. This decision to release on OTT caused a stir among Kerala theater owners, who protested against the film’s non-traditional distribution strategy.

On June 7, the film premiered on an OTT platform, deviating from the usual theatrical release pattern.

This move sparked outrage among Kerala theater owners, leading to a two-day strike on June 7 and 8 to express their dissatisfaction. The film had only been in theaters for five weeks before the OTT release announcement was made.

The digital platform Sony LIV announced on May 28 that “2018” would be available for streaming starting June 7.This decision not only upset Kerala theater owners but also affected the film’s chances of crossing the ₹200 crore mark at the box office.

Directed by the talented filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph, “2018” tells a story of resilience in the face of disaster. It revolves around the devastating floods that struck Kerala in 2018 and features renowned actors like Kunchacko Boban, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Asif Ali, Aparna Balamurali, and Aju Varghese. The film portrays the indomitable spirit of the people in the midst of a catastrophic natural calamity.
