New Delhi, Aug 6 : Ransomware will become an increasingly fragmented network in the second quarter of this year with numerous small and medium-sized groups instead of some large ones that can be hidden in the light of day more efficiently, a new study has revealed.Hackers are continuing to break into and steal crypto assets throughout the year.
“In addition, we’ll witness the first attacks in the metaverse that exploit vulnerabilities in smart contracts,” said the report by cyber-security company Check Point Software.
The last year saw a 42 percent increase in cyber attacks across the globe, with ransomware becoming number one threat.
Ransomware groups are becoming more organized and operate as normal business, with set targets to achieve as cyber attacks evolve into state-level weapons.
“We have seen a massive increase in cyberattacks on organizations in all sectors and across all countries in the past year.
Unfortunately, this is only going to increase, especially with ransomware being the most significant threat to companies,” said Maya Horowitz the VP of Research at Check Point Software.
Because of the introduction of macros on the internet that are disabled in default in Microsoft office, most sophisticated malware families will speed up the creation of new infection chains with various file types that are password-protected to ensure that they are not detected as advanced social engineering attacks become more sophisticated.
“Hacktivist organizations will continue aligning their attack with the policies of their nation state of choice especially since the war between Ukraine and Russia is in progress,” the report noted.
