Seoul 8 August : Hyundai Motor Group’s total sales of eco-friendly vehicles have surpassed 1 million in July 13 years after it made its entrance into the green car market, data released on Monday showed.The automaking giant said its two carmaking affiliates — Hyundai Motor Co.and Kia Corp.– sold a combined 29,484 environmentally-friendly vehicles in July alone, raising their cumulative sales to 1.024 million.
The milestone was achieved following Hyundai Motor Group entered the green market for vehicles in July 2009 with the launch of the hybrid version of the Avante subcompact, according to Yonhap news agency.
Hyundai Motor, South Korea’s most renowned automaker, recorded total sales of 556,854 units with Kia accounting for the remaining.
Hyundai Motor’s Grandeur Hybrid, which debuted in 2013 was the most popular green car with total sales of around 184,000 units.
Kia’s Niro hybrid model followed with approximately 126,500.It was then followed by the Sonata hybrid with around 98,300.
Hyundai Motor Group said its sales of eco-friendly vehicles could continue to grow in light of the increasing demand of electric vehicles.
All in all, Hyundai Motor’s second-quarter net profits jumped by 56 percent from a year ago due to an improved mix of products and the weak won.
Net profits for the three months that ended in June was 3.08 trillion won ($2.34 billion) from 1.98 trillion won in the same time of the previous year.
In the six months, Hyundai sold a total of 1.88 million vehicles, which was 43 percent of its sales goal of 4.34 million units in the entire year.
