The central government on Tuesday announced a revision in the prices of the LPG cooking gas, lowering the 14.2 kg cylinder price by Rs 200.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha took a potshot at the BJP government at Centre for first increasing the prices of the cylinder by Rs 800 and later, reducing it by Rs 200, keeping in mind the upcoming elections.
“First Increase the LPG cylinder price by Rs 800/- And then decrease it by Rs 200.It’s not a gift, but absolute gaslighting of people’s emotions and pockets.#gascylinder,” she tweeted.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendera Modi has decided on Rs 200 reduction in the price of domestic LPG cylinders for all users. This is a gift from PM Narendra Modi, to women of the country, on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
Thakur also said that the central government has decided to add another 75 lakh Ujjwala gas beneficiaries. At present, there are 9.6 crore beneficiaries of the scheme.India is dependent on imports for 60 per cent of its natural gas requirements.
Cooking gas prices have shot up in the last couple of years and have become a major election issue.
The Congress party used the high LPG prices, which had burnt a hole in the budgets of households already reeling under a high inflation, effectively used in the recently concluded assembly elections in Karnataka.
Congress has promised to give LPG at Rs 500 per cylinder if voted to power in Madhya Pradesh, where elections are due in November-December.The Congress is also providing the LPG at the same price in Rajasthan, where elections are due in November-December.
