Islamabad, Aug 12 : The relationship between India and Pakistan may not be seeing any forward positive movement towards engagements and resolution of disputes, but it certainly remains one of the main narratives and part of every political party’s manifesto for point scoring, especially during the election campaigns.
India and Pakistan are bordering neighbours and the relationship between the two nations has seen many ups and down with both sides issuing official statements and warnings of consequences, if their respective territorial demarcations are breached.
For decades, both countries have made failed attempts to create gateways of communication through various initiatives for dialogue. But the uproar and criticism that leaderships of both sides faced domestically, have directly supported their respective political opponents, who carried an “anti-India” or “anti-Pakistan” narrative.
In Pakistan, India-centric political narrative remains one of the most important components of any party’s election manifesto and part of its future foreign policy. From the Kashmir issue, Kulbushan Jadhav’s arrest, to alleged support to terror elements in Balochistan and more prominently, the August 5, 2019 decision by India to change the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, are one of the top pointers that are mentioned, addressed and made part of every single political gathering by every political party.
“The Kashmir issue and India’s actions in Kashmir are certainly part of every political party’s election speech. The sentiments of the people of Pakistan are flared up and they are promised that Kashmir issue will be resolved by hook or crook, if their party is brought into power,” said Javed Siddique, a senior political analyst.
“India is also brought into consideration when political leaders criticise their opponents of failing to act against New Delhi during their tenures.Be it any party, they always criticise their predecessors for not doing enough to pressure India,” he added.
Most recently, former Prime Minister Imran Khan was slammed by his political opponents, for failing to stop India from taking its August 5, 2019 decision on Jammu and Kashmir.
“Imran Khan bartered a deal on Kashmir. He sold out Kashmir to India” are some of the many accusations the PTI chief’s political opponents level against him, adding that they would pressure India to reverse its decision when they come to power.
Therefore, it can be established and maintained India remains as one of the top priorities in political narrative building of all political parties in Pakistan.
