Bagheri Kani stated that the focus of negotiations since Monday’s eighth round was to remove sanctions against Iran.

He said that Iran and Enrique Mora (Deputy Foreign Policy Chief for the European Union) discussed the issue of verification in separate meetings.

According to Xinhua, the Iranian chief negotiator expressed optimism that the New Year would bring about greater interest from all parties in the lifting of sanctions.

In July 2015, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the P5+1.

The agreement was terminated by the US Government under the former President Donald Trump in May 2018.

In April, Iran and all the other parties to the JCPOA reopened talks in Vienna.

These talks aim to remove US sanctions on Iran and restore the JCPOA, which was in danger of collapse after US unilateral withdrawal.
