Manila, December 27, 2012 : .The Philippines’ powerful Typhoon Rai has claimed 389 lives and left 64 others missing.

This was according to a Monday statement by the government disaster agency.
According to Xinhua, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, (NDRRMC), the typhoon that struck the Philippines on December 16 also caused 1,146 deaths, according to Xinhua.

According to the NDRRMC, the typhoon affected over 4.2 million people in eleven regions of central and southern Philippines as well as in parts of main Luzon Island.

Typhoon 15th, which was the strongest to hit the country in this year’s history, caused villagers to flee their homes and spend the holiday season at evacuation centers.

The agency estimates that nearly 315,000 people, out of the more than 570,000, are currently housed temporarily in 1,179 evacuation centers.

Over 500,000 homes were damaged.

The amount of Typhoon-related damage caused to infrastructure and agriculture has exceeded 22 billion pesos (440 million).

Maria Rosario Vergeire, Health Undersecretary, stated in an online briefing, that the typhoon caused damage to 141 facilities including hospitals and clinics, located in five regions hardest hit by the storm.

The Department of Health has been monitoring food- and waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea in areas ravaged by Typhoon Haiyan.

Patients were transported to hospital.

Vergeire advised evacuees that they follow the Covid-19 infection prevention guidelines.He also stressed the importance of monitoring for coronavirus symptoms in evacuees and making separate rooms for vulnerable people such as the elderly.

According to her, the Typhoon also affected 62 Covid-19 testing labs and caused thousands of deaths from vaccines.

The government is continuing to provide aid for the affected areas.This includes food and drinking water as well as repairing damaged roads, telecommunications, and houses.
