Writer Ishani Banerjee is known for her powerful storytelling in films like Aligarh and the web series Human. Her latest creation is the show School of Lies, which started streaming on an OTT platform on June 2.Directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware, the series features Nimrat Kaur, Aamir Bashir, and Sonali Kulkarni.Ishani recently spoke exclusively with the Free Press Journal about the genesis of the show and her approach to storytelling.
The idea for School of Lies was born when Avinash and Ishani came across various incidents in different boarding schools. These incidents sparked Ishani’s interest and she felt that they could be the foundation of an intriguing show.
However, she wanted the narrative to be more layered and not just a simple whodunit. The concept resonated with the OTT platform, which came on board after being impressed by the idea.
Ishani previously co-wrote the social thriller web series Human. When asked if she had a preference for telling such stories, she explained that her focus is always on telling relevant stories with a human element.
She avoids adopting a preachy narrative often associated with social thrillers.According to Ishani, relatable characters and a human touch are the key to success in any story.
OTT platforms have played a crucial role in revolutionizing the content landscape. When asked about the recognition and respect writers are receiving in this medium, Ishani acknowledged that the industry is still in its early stages. She emphasized the need for better contracts, more time, and financial support for writers.
Although OTT platforms are considered a writer’s medium, Ishani believes that creative control should be a collaborative effort between writers and producers.
She expressed concern that a market-driven or producer-driven approach can stifle unique stories and voices. However, she finds hope in the ongoing conversations and believes that things are gradually improving for writers.
