New Delhi, Sep 6 : Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed hope that the dispute over sharing the water of Teesta river, a major bone of dispute between her nation and India -is likely to be resolved in the near future.
“Both both countries have solved many long-standing issues while with the spirit of friendship and cooperation in mind.

I wish that any other issue, including the water sharing of Teesta river, will be resolved quickly,” the visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister said.

The disagreement between the two countries regarding the allocation of the river’s water have been a source of dispute for many years.

Numerous meetings that were held on the subject did result in little or no results.

Bangladesh has been requesting an equal part in the distribution of the water from the river.

In this regard there was a treaty to be concluded between India and Bangladesh in 2011, during the time of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the neighboring country.

However, the deal may not be signed due to the strong opposition of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Hasina She is currently on a four-day trip to India She declared: “The water is emerging from the Indian side.Therefore, India must show its generosity.”

The Bangladeshi Prime Minister stated that she would like to see she can convince her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will be able to look into all the issues that pertain to bilateral relations which includes Teesta water sharing.
