Campbell stated that President Xi said at the virtual meeting that a lot of the things the United States does to China are causing it heartburn. He was speaking in a forum hosted by US Institute of Peace (a think tank run by Washington state)

He said, “And I believe at the top that list is our reinforcing, revitalising our bilateral Security Alliances with Japan with South Korea with Australia, The Philippines, and Thailand.”

Yonhap news agency reported that the US stressed the importance of working together with allies and partners to tackle regional and global problems. This includes maintaining an orderly Indo-Pacific.

Although Washington claims its Indo-Pacific stability efforts do not aim at any particular country, most believe that such efforts point to China and put pressure on US allies.

Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor, stated that the US had formed alliances with South Korea and other countries which allowed President Trump to interact with China from a position where he was stronger.

Biden has strengthened the alliances we have with Japan and the Republic of Korea, making them as powerful as ever in their history. That was the setting for President Biden’s meeting last night, Sullivan stated.

Choi Jong-kun, South Korea’s first vice foreign minister, stated that the US/China rivalry places South Korea in a tough spot.He noted that South Korea’s trade with China is larger than the US or Japan combined.
