Tokyo 8 August : Japan on Tuesday commemorated the anniversary of the 77th anniversary of the nuclear attack of Nagasaki in the Second World War. The annual ceremony was able to allow greater attendance due to the ease of restrictions on Covid-19, according to Xinhua news agency.
A number of dignitaries and officials from over 80 countries were in attendance at the ceremony as well with relatives and survivors of those who were killed.They had been gathering since the early hours in the morning to pray.
In the morning, at 11.02 a.m.at which time a moment of silence was observed on the 9th of August 1945 the US B-29 bomber dropped a bomb made of plutonium core that was dubbed Fat Man, killing around 74,000 people in Nagasaki at the close of the year.
For a year, from the final day of July, Nagasaki confirmed the deaths of 3,160 survivors of the atomic bomb, with its list now officially recognizing 192,310 of them as the victims of the nuclear bombing.
The nuclear bombing of Nagasaki was followed by the one that was dropped on Hiroshima on the 6th of August inducing Japan to give up its independence.
At the event, Nagasaki Mayor Taue Tomihisa stated that nuclear states bear a particular responsibility as a result of the non-proliferation agreement, and a clear and tangible method to reduce nuclear weapons must be demonstrated.
In his speech in his address, Premier Fumio Kishida said that Japan is determined to create an unipolar world.
