Iraqi media reported that the meeting was postponed until the following Thursday according to the dpa news agency.

At least 25 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the violence, which began after al-Sadr’s supporters stormed the government buildings in the Green Zone area on Monday.

The Speaker of the Parliament Mohammed al-Halbusi announced a three-day mourning period on Wednesday.

Since the parliamentary elections of October the political parties have not been able to reach an agreement on the nominees for the post of President and Prime Minister.

Al-Sadr’s group won the highest number of seats, but it was not able to form the majority required to form a government.

Even as he is calling for an early election and a referendum on Iran, his rivals from Iran are seeking to form a government.

The Coordination Framework political alliance had one of its nominees a couple of weeks ago, however al-Sadr did not approve the candidate due to of his connections to the cleric’s former rival and former Premier Nuri al-Maliki.

The Coordination Framework alliance reject al-Sadr’s attempts to obtain an order from a judge to dissolve parliament, stating that the constitution states that only lawmakers have the power to dissolve parliament.
