Karachi Sep 11, : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned the world that all countries will be impacted “beyond their ability to adapt” in the event that the world fails to meet the challenges of climate change.Samaa TV reported.
After two days of Pakistan visit The UN head took to Twitter to say that he had “never seen climate devastation in the magnitude of the floods that have occurred here in Pakistan”.

“This is a global emergency.It requires an international reaction,” he said.

The monsoon’s rains as well as subsequent flooding have killed 1 396 residents across the country from June 14 to September 9 and left 12,728 wounded.

Over 30 million people have been forced to relocate, Dawn reported.

Sindh is the province that has suffered the most to date, causing the majority of injuries and deaths.

Of the 1,396 deaths in the entire country Sindh’s total is 578.The number of injuries totals 8,321 of the total of 12,728.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Saturday said that his organization is adamantly promoting “debt swaps” with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank through which developing countries such as Pakistan – instead of repaying the loans they owe to creditors from abroadthey could make use of that cash to invest in climate resilience and the development of in sustainable infrastructure, as well as eco-friendly transition of their economies, Express Tribune reported.

“We will continue to be adamantly in promoting the solutions in the meetings with the IMF and the World Bank that will take place in the near future, as well as during the G-20 meeting,” Guterres told the media upon his arrival at the airport of Karachi.

The UN chief has urged the world community to ramp the level of its assistance to the flood-stricken Pakistan, Express Tribune reported.

“We are witnessing here in Pakistan that nature is fighting back with terrible consequences” he observed, adding: “I have seen many catastrophes in the world, but I’ve never witnessed the magnitude of climate destruction.”
