Bairstow’s injuries are an enormous setback to England’s hopes of finishing off the series of Tests against South Africa when the third Test begins at The Oval, starting from September 8 and their attempt to win the men’s T20 World Cup title to be the first team of men to have 20-over and 50-over World Cup trophies at the same at the same time.

“Bairstow suffered an injury to his lower limb in an accident while playing golf on Friday in Leeds. He will be seen by an expert next week to determine the degree of the injuries.

A second announcement will be made in the near future about the person who will take Bairstow’s place in England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup team,” said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on their website.

In his Instagram post, Bairstow revealed he will require an operation to treat the lower leg injury that occurred after sliding on a golf course earlier in the day.”Unfortunately I’m going to be out of all tournaments and games in the near future. The reason is that I damaged my lower leg in an accident that was not my fault and will require an operation.”

“The injury occurred when I fell in the green this morning.I am devastated and would like to wish everyone a wonderful week at The Oval all the best first of all and the boys who will travel to Australia for the T20 World Cup.I am devastated! I’ll return.”

ECB has also announced the public that Nottinghamshire batter Ben Duckett, who played four Tests for England in the year 2016, was added to the team for the third Test in The Oval, which sets the stage for a series decider between hosts and Proteas with the score at 1-1.

England men’s managing director Rob Key had said that Bairstow will be the batting opener in T20 World Cup alongside Jos Buttler, who was the designated opener.Jason Roy was dropped due to his poor performance in English summer.

“The most recent date announcement of the World Cup squad was the 16th.So , it was not like we could have used Pakistan. We’d be putting our money on him (Roy) finding his form in the current time.We felt with the number of openers we were able to select, and we believed Jonny Bairstow was one of the top openers in T20 cricket in the world. He’s been successful in the IPL but has also been excellent in the middle order too – we believed the best combo at the moment was Jonny and Jos and we tried to work to build from there.”
