Shillong 2 Sep : After the detention of 37 jihadi leaders in just a few months in Assam for suspicions of connections with the Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent and the Ansarul Bangla Team, an Bangladesh-based terror group Northeastern states that have a the border with Bangladesh have intensified the surveillance.Officials from the police and intelligence in Agartala and Shillong on Friday independently stated the strict surveillance of terrorist activities has been intensified and the intelligence inputs of the various security agencies are shared to help determine the next direction of action.
Meghalaya Director General of Police Lajja Ram Bishnoi told reporters in Shillong that, following the information of militant jihadis in Assam the directions were given to all police stations and outposts, especially in the areas that have boundaries with Bangladesh to keep an eye on the villages that border with Bangladesh.
“Our security officials and police personnel are vigilant about the jihadi activity,” the police officer told the media.
In Agartala the Agartala police officer stated that Border Security Force (BSF) troopers as well as the residents of the bordering regions were warned to be on guard in their respective zones.
The three cadres who were recently detained in Tripura due to their links with the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), were later transferred to Assam as part of the investigation into the Jihadi group.
Intelligence officials have discovered links between these three individuals with the four who were detained in Bhopal in April over their links with the JMB.
The top central and Tripura intelligence officials interrogated Imran Hussain 25 an Imam Abul Kashem 32 teacher and Hamid Ali farmer.They were detained from Jatrapur which is a village in Sepahijala district of Tripura near the border between Bangladesh and India.
They were arrested in accordance with the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
The Investigation Agency filed charge-sheet against eight of the 37 detained in Assam in connection with alleged connections with fundamentalist organizations.
Out of the eight, seven hail from Assam’s western Barpeta district, and one is from Tripura.
The Assam government given the case of “jihadi terror groups” to the NIA following the initial investigation.
Four Indian northeastern states of Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km) share a border of 1,880-km with Bangladesh.
Large areas of the border areas that are sensitive with Bangladesh are not yet fenced.
