Taipei : , Dec 29, 2009 – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, (TSMC), is rumored to be launching its 2nm production by 2025.According to media reports, it’s the largest chip contract manufacturer in the world.GizmoChina reports that the company wants to construct a 2nm second production plant next to Zhonke Park, Taichung, Taiwan.
Apparently, TSMC’s CEO, C.C.Wei surprised the Taichung government by paying a surprise visit.Shiow-Yen Lu (the mayor of Taichung) stated that it could cost 1 trillion New Taiwan dollars to build this 2nm fab, which would be roughly $36 billion.
The smaller process node allows for increased transistor count, which makes the chip more efficient.
The report stated that it was still premature to know if plans for a 2nm manufacturing site will be realized.
According to a recent report, the company will begin production of 3nm-based chips in the fourth quarter 2022.
New 3nm processors are expected to offer enhanced performance and longer battery life. These M3 chips, which are 3nm in size, will be able to power both 2023 Macs and iPhone models.
