New Delhi 26 December : .The Election Commission is to meet with top officials from the Union Health Ministry Monday in order to review the Covid situation within the five states that are poll bound, according sources.According to a source, the Commission will review the Covid situation in poll-bound countries and seek updates from Rajesh Bhushan (Union Health Secretary) on the new Covid variant Omicron.It is expected that the commission will also seek recommendations on how to improve the Covid protocol, including polling days and campaigning.
The Assembly Elections are scheduled in five states: Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Uttarakhand.They will be held in 2022.
According to a source, the schedule for the elections is expected to be released in the first week in January.
On Tuesday, the Chief Election Commissioner along with other officials will visit Uttar Pradesh (the largest among the five) to assess the state’s poll readiness.
A bench of the Allahabad High Court on Thursday urged government officials to postpone the Assembly elections in UP by a month or so and ban all political rallies, amid increasing Covid cases every day.
India reports an increase in Covid cases per day.In the span of 24 hours, 6,987 new cases were reported across India on Sunday.According to the Health Ministry, there were 162 additional deaths, bringing the death toll to 4,79,682.
In the country, Omicron infections have also increased to 422 Out of the total Omicron-positive cases, only 130 were reported.The Health Ministry reported that 17 states had so far reported this new Covid variant.
