United Nations, Sep 9 : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded that countries intensify their efforts to improve human development after the latest Human Development Report shows that the world’s human development for the first time in history it has slowed for the past two years in consecutive years. “Our world is confronted with a variety of interconnected issues that are disrupting people’s lives and disrupting global economic growth.
They are causing spikes in energy and food prices, causing the cost of living and putting vulnerable nations in debt.A slow recovery of the economy due to the pandemic is increasing inequality and leaving whole regions in the dust,” he said in video messages at the launch of the Human Development Report.
This is at a point when developing nations are having to deal with a myriad of issues that aren’t of their own including the pandemic, to the effects of the climate crisis to debt burden and an absence of access to the resources to finance reconstruction in the backdrop of ever-growing inequality, he was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
“We are currently facing a severe storm that could destroy the economics of many of the countries in need.
In the meantime, a rising mental health epidemic is impacting millions of people across the globe.The current Human Development Report shows how these challenges cause a great deal of uncertainty.
Uncertainty can be costly,” warned the UN chief.
The report proposes an obvious solution: countries should redouble their efforts in human development and improve policies around three I’s: Investment insurance and innovation he said.”We should put money in worldwide public goods, expand insurance via social safety nets; and innovating to create new avenues and new technologies.This is crucial to empower people and restoring the Sustainable Development Goals, and creating a better future in an age of change.”
The most recent Human Development Report, released by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) it indicates that nine of of 10 countries fall behind in the human development owing to multiple crises.
