Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh) 21 August : Two men from the upper caste were arrested for slapping an ethnic Dalit man with their shoes.One of the accused is the chief of the village.
The incident occurred about a fortnight ago in Reta Nagla village in Chappar region, however the police were able to intervene after a video of the incident became all over social media.
According to the reports, Dinesh Kumar, 41 a Dalit labourer was reported to have made a few comments regarding the village pradhan Shakti Mohan Singh.
The comments appeared to have offended Shakti Mohan Singh, the latter’s wife.
To settle the issue, Gaje Singh, a former pradhan of the village that is adjacent, Reta Nagla, called the two to his house.
In the course of the meeting, Shakti Mohan allegedly lost his temper and slapped Dinesh with his footwear.Gaje joined him shortly in attacking the victim.
After the video of the incident, recorded using a mobile device was posted through social media platforms, Muzaffarnagar police made suo-motu inquiries and made an FIR at the Chhapar police station.
SSP Vineeet Jaiswal, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vineeet Jaiswal on Sunday said, “We have taken the suspects into custody.They were arrested under various sections of the IPC as well as the SC/ST Act.”
