Tel Aviv : , Israel arrested over 50 Hamas operatives in West Bank after a shooting incident that killed a soldier in East Jerusalem.This was reported jointly by the Shin Bet, an internal security agency of the Jewish state, and the Army.According to Xinhua, the people who were arrested Monday are accused of plotting attacks on Israelis.
According to the Army, “a large-scale terrorist group” was discovered in the West Bank over the last few months.
It also stated that cell members planned attacks on Jerusalem and the West Bank.
According to the statement, “The terrorist cell that was thwarted possessed many explosives and weapons including explosives capable of building heavy explosive terror belts,”
According to the statement, more than 50 cells were detained in the operation.
It was a result of “unique intelligence activity” as well collaborations between the Shin Bet and the police and military.
In a separate statement, the Shin Bet stated that the Shin Bet operatives were involved in the establishment of the terrorist infrastructure.
A 42-year-old Palestinian from East Jerusalem opened fire outside al-Aqsa mosque compound.Eliyahu Kay (26), was killed in the attack.He was buried Monday in Jerusalem.
Two police officers and two civilians were also injured.
Hamas saluted the attack, and said that the shooter was part of their ranks.
It did not say if the group was involved in the plan of the attack.
