Government to establish a national assistance line against the atrocities committed on SCs/STs

New Delhi (12/12/2008) The government launched a National Helpline Against Atrocities on Monday with the objective of raising awareness and reducing discrimination.
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will launch the helpline with the aim of ensuring proper implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities (PoA) Act, 1990.

This Act was passed to prevent atrocities against members of SCs and STs.

According to the ministry, the NHAA is available 24 hours a day on the national toll-free phone number 14566.You can access it by calling /VOIP from any mobile number or landline of any telecom operator in the country.

The service is available in Hindi and English, as well as the regional languages of the States/UTs.The mobile app will be also available.It will register every complaint as an FIR and provide relief.All registered complaints are also investigated.Chargesheets are filed in Courts of Decision within the timeframes set out in the Act.

The NHAA is also available as a self-service portal on the web.It will raise awareness of the Protection of Civil Right Act (PCR Act) 1955 as well as its rules.

“A docket number shall be given for each complaint received from Victim/Complainant/NGOs regarding non-compliance of the POA Act, 1989 and the PCR Act, 1955.The status of the grievance can be tracked by complainant/NGOs online.

“Any inquiry shall be replied by IVR or operators in Hindi, English and regional languages.This helpline will adopt the concept of single point of contact and have a proper feedback system,” the ministry added.
