AIIMS students demonstrate against ads concerning the deaths of paramedical student

New Delhi, Aug 13 : Students from the paramedical department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) held a demonstration here on Saturday, a day that hospital administrators were not happy with in the wake of the passing of one Optometry student.
The students who were agitated claim that the deaths were by the carelessness of the hospital’s management.

The students claimed that if the authorities offered them a hostel in the hospital’s premises, the life of the patient could have been saved.

The victim, Abhishek Malviya, was an undergraduate student of Optometry.

Three days ago, he complained of suffocation and breathing problems. When his friends sought assistance, hospital officials were reported to have refused an ambulance declaring that Malviya was not a hostelier and that such services should not be provided to students who live outside of the hospital campus.

It took about 2 hours for Malviya to make it to the AIIMS emergency room, which is where he was declared critically ill following which he was transferred into the private Ward of the hospital. He was diagnosed with H1N1 (influenza) and his lung function weakened when he was put on ECMO.

“When doctors declared him dead the following morning, they told them that he was suffering from multiple lung infections which included Covid-19, influenza and bacteria-related infections. He was prescribed ECMO to treat artificial lung,” the Optometry Students Association of AIIMS stated in an announcement.

Every year, AIIMS conducts entrance test for paramedical UG programs where Optometry is a significant seat part.Since the class of 2020 the hospital began to deny basic UG facilities such as hostel accommodation for paramedical UG students because of the absence of accommodation for MBBS students according to the association.

“Had had hostels been available available for our students, Malviya would have survived. The whole thing occurred because of AIIMS administration’s inattention, and it could happen to other people in the future too,” said the statement.

“We need assurance of accommodation for hostels from AIIMS administration so that tragic events don’t happen once more in the near future,” it added.
