Kolkata 25 August : A team of the 82 attorneys from West Bengal, practicing at the Calcutta High Court as well as various district courts have approached the Chief Justice of India, N.V.Ramanna with an appeal to take the appropriate steps for the transfer of the cattle smuggling cases to any court that is not in West Bengal.
In the plea that the copy of the plea has also been sent to Union Law and Justice Minister, Kiren Rijuju, they referenced the recent incident of particular CBI judge Rajeshchakraborty in Asansol who received a threat letter stating that he as well as his family members would be arrested in the case of narcotics should he does not accept the bail demand of Trinamool Congress strongman, Anubrata Mondal who was arrested by the central government in connection with the cattle trafficking case.
In the letter addressed to the CJI the group of advocates argued that as Mondal is the Birbhum district President of the ruling party, they are worried about attempts to intimidate judges for the benefit of the “highly influential politician” in custody.
“We general attorneys of Calcutta High Court and other district courts of West Bengal, are very concerned when we come to learn of this fact and strongly protest against this attack on the judiciary.
We ask your Lordship to take a responsible action in this matter, and transfer the case from West Bengal to any other state in order that the execution of justice is not compromised with or impeded, and that the wrongdoers are punished in a manner that is fair,” the letter read.
