Lagos 3rd September : At at least 56 people were killed as well as more than 4,000 others were displaced due to the impact of recent heavy flooding that destroyed areas of the northern Nigerian state of Jigawa an official said to Xinhua.According to Yusuf Sani Babura, Head of the State Emergency Management Agency in Jigawa the floods caused by the heavy rainfall since the start of the season of rain in May have damaged homes as well as farmlands and crops in 27 local areas of government of Jigawa, the state.
“We remain battling rain even as we speak,” Babura told Xinhua via phone.
More than 56 have lost their lives, and more than 4,000 have been left homeless due to the floods that have been that have been recorded in areas of the state in May, he said.
So far , 16 camps have been set up for the care of those who have been displaced by the floods, the official said appealed to the federal government as well as donors and individuals to help of flood victims, Xinhua news agency reported.
In the meantime the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development ordered an assessment by National Emergency Management Agency officials and the distribution of immediate aid items to the people affected in Jigawa to lessen the effects of floods as per reports from local media on Friday.
Nigerian authorities in May issued an alert to 32 of the 36 states as well as the Federal Capital Territory of the country warning of extreme flooding this year.
