Goa Forward Party asks Samant government to stop efforts of K’taka to use water to divert

Panaji 5 August : Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai, on Friday, wrote to the Chief Secretary of the state, requesting him to take measures to stop Karnataka from allegedly building the Bandaras (weir) and to stop any attempts to divert the waters of the Mhadei River.
Citing the environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar that the Karnataka government is allegedly initiating the building with the goal of diverting water away from the Mhadei basin in Karnataka, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai pleaded for the intervention of the state government to conduct an inspection.

“The actions of Karnataka pose a grave risk to the Mhadei River flowing through Goa.There is a pressing need to look into the issue and bring it to the attention of Tribunal as well as the Hon’ble Supreme Court on priority,” Sardesai stated in a letter.

“Chief Minister Dr.Pramod Sawant has stated numerous times that Mhadei is more than just a mother to him.The majority of Goans consider that the Mhadei River is our lifeline.Therefore I, as a member of Goa Forward Party Goa Forward Party request the government to work on a war-footing basis , conducting an inspection right away and taking the necessary measures to stop Karnataka from building the Bandaras and stop any attempt to divert the water,” He further said.
