Sitharaman opens IT-D’s Srinagar office

Srinagar, Nov 22 : The Income Tax Department’s new Office-cum-Residential complex — The Chinars, here, was inaugurated on Monday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Lt.Governor Manoj Sinha.
The Finance Minister dedicated the project to Jammu and Kashmir’s Union Territory (UT), Jammu and Kashmir.He stated that the new Income Tax Office at Srinagar would act as a link between the residents of the area and the most efficient taxpayer services.

It will also assist them with their taxation problems through Aaykar Sewa Kendra.

Sitharaman said that the environment will be conducive to the participation of “bhagidari”, which is people, in the area’s development.

Sinha spoke out about the role of tax payers in economic development and stated that Income Tax is moving from filing returns to issuing refunds.

In his speech, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bjaj highlighted the growing contribution of Jammu-Kashmir to the exchequer.

This was reflected in Srinagar’s elevation of the Income tax charge to Srinagar to that of Principal Commissioner for Income Tax.

Bajaj stated that the new Income Tax Office will be a platform to provide information, guidance, and ease for taxpayers to help them reap the economic benefits of the increased activity.

This event is a step forward towards realising Central government’s vision to deliver quality taxpayer services, and facilitate participation by all taxpayers from Jammu and Kashmir in our tax system.It’s done in an atmosphere of trust and respect.

The IT Department’s commitment to bring the services of taxpayers closer to people in the area has seen the building of this office from a small rented house in Barbarshah, in 1954.

At Rs 13.50 crore, the 3.5-acre campus was purchased in 2008.The project began in November 2015 and was finished in July 2020 by NBCC.

Up to date, the total amount spent is Rs 27.78 Crore.It consists of eight buildings, including the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax Srinagar’s office and 33 residential units.There is also an 8-room guesthouse.

The Finance Minister urged both CBIC and CBDT officers to change their ways and to reach out to business and industry to determine what they expect from the government.

The Finance Minister stressed that both CBDT and CBIC officers should be working together, but also highlighted the important role of facilitators & teachers, making them more available to taxpayers in the region, to offer better services.
