Large S.Korean companies cut employment during pandemic

Seoul, 23 Nov : , Large South Korean corporations have reduced their workforces by over 1% in the last two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.This was according to a corporate tracker Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Leaders Index, the number of workers employed by the top 500 companies in the country by sales was 1.24million as of September this year.This is 1.02 percent or approximately 12,800 less than two years ago.

These firms eliminated approximately 18,200 jobs during the period cited, and increased the number of workers who are not regular by around 5,400.

The job cuts were most severe for women, who accounted to 67% of all those being laid off.Male workers accounted only 74% of total workforce at the September end.

Broker houses, pharmaceutical firms, electronic and electric businesses, state corporations, as well as information and technology companies and companies added to the workforce.Meanwhile, trading companies, distributors, and communication firms saw their payrolls decrease.

IT, electric, and electronic companies employed around 8.900 additional workers over the same period.Retailers, wholesalers, and distributors cut almost 11,300 jobs.

The largest increase in jobs was posted by global tech giant Samsung Electronics Co.(8,606).This is followed closely by Hyundai Motor Co.(2,018) and chip titan SK Hynix Inc.(1550).

According to the Leaders Index, Lotte Shopping Co., a retail giant, recorded the largest job loss of approximately 5,100.CJ CGV Co., a top multiplex chain with about 3,700, and GS Retail Co., with 1,800 each, was second.
