First heart transplant that was successful surgery performed in Delhi’s RML Hospital

New Delhi, Aug 23 : The first successful heart transplant surgery has been carried out in Dr.Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in the capital of the nation and has given an entirely new life of life to a woman who is 32 years old.
Laxmi Devi, a native of Bhagalpur in Bihar was diagnosed with an end-of-life heart condition following birth, after which she suffered from extreme breathlessness.

A group of cardiologists headed by Ranjith Nath and Praveen Agarwal had recommended the need for a heart transplant.

Following this, she was granted registration with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) to undergo the operation as soon as there was possible time of the donor heart.

The donor was identified in a girl of the age of Basu who was involved with an accident on the 15 and was taken to PGI Chandigarh with severe head injury.

She was declared brain dead on the 20th of August 20 and was placed on a ventilator to preserve her organs.

After being counseled by the coordinator for transplants in PGI Chandigarh, her father, Ajo Manji, a daily wage labourer, decided to give her organs.

In the early morning of August 21, NOTTO released an alert regarding the availability of an organ donor heart.A group of cardiac surgeons from RML Hospital and AIIMS led by Narender Singh Jhajhria travelled to PGI Chandigarh in the evening and took the donor heart.

The heart was transported to Delhi within two hours.

On the night of Monday, a group led by Vijaygrover and comprised of Milind Hote and Narender Jhajhria, Palash Aiyer and anesthetists Ramesh Kashev and Jaswinder performed the heart transplant surgery on Laxmi Devi in the RML Hospital.

Basu’s corneas, kidneys, pancreas, and liver were donated, thereby giving a new life of life to five others.
