CBI starts investigation against three cops of Bengal Police in bribery case

Kolkata, Oct 25 : The office of the anti-corruption wing of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started investigation against three officers of West Bengal Police who are accused of bribery.

Among the three officers, two are attached to the criminal investigation department (CBI) of the state police.

Recently, the CBI started the investigation against the three officers after filing an FIR in the matter.

The initial investigation was started by Worli Police Station against these officers following complaint by a businessman named Jitendra Navlani accusing them of collecting bribe to tune of Rs 20 lakhs for getting relieved from a case.

The three officers, include Rajarshi Banerjee and Sumit Banerjee, both currently attached to CID and the inspector-in- charge of Raniganj Police Station in West Burdwan district Sudip Dasgupta.

The investigation was transferred to CBI by Maharashtra government.

The CID was investigating a case of seizure of Rs 3.02 crore from a vehicle at Raniganj last year.The police claimed that the unaccounted cash belonged to company christened Bonanza Fashion which was reportedly owned by Navlani.The police even filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Navlani in the matter.

However, the court dismissed the case on grounds that no investigative agency, other than ED can initiate a case under PMLA against any individual.
