A volunteer allegedly withdrew money from a woman’s account by taking her thumb impression in the guise of sanctioning an old age pension at Nagineni Kunta in Marripadu mandal of Nellore district.

According to victim Hussainamma, who tried to withdraw money from her bank account and was astonished when bankers informed her that there was no money in the account, the money was withdrawn a few days ago by volunteer Kasim Peera via a mobile app.

She questioned Kasim Peera, who admitted that he drew the money and would return it, but that it had not been returned.Similarly, another volunteer, Khadar Babu, allegedly collected Rs 5,7000 cash from 19 beneficiaries’ old age pensions and fled on August 2.

Earlier on Saturday, July 29, a ward volunteer brutally killed a 72-year-old woman and absconded with gold and cash, according to the police.The incident took place in Sujatha Nagar, under Pendurthi police station limits, in Vizag city.

Police said the accused, R Venkatesh, 26, smothered the victim, Kotagiri Varalakshmi, with a pillow, causing her death.Apart from working as a ward volunteer, Venkatesh used to work part-time with the victim’s son, K Srinivas, at a food stall.
