“Stopping the Israeli measures that resulted in (building) settlements as well as incursions and daily murders and preserving the historic status in Jerusalem would create an opportunity for political progress that would lead to the end of the Israeli occupation,” al-Sheikh told Leaf.

After an excursion of three days to Tunisia which ended on August 31st, Leaf is currently visiting Israel and the West Bank to discuss US cooperation with Israel and the Palestinian Authority during her another three-day visit in the region. Her trip will close on September 3 according to the US statement from the government.

This week, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki stated in a statement to the media that Palestine’s accession to UN as a fully-fledged sovereign state will be a top priority in the agenda of the trip of Leaf, Xinhua news agency reported.

The US will not permit Palestine to be a full-member in the UN al-Maliki stated in the statement.

In 2012 the UN General Assembly granted Palestine an observer status that was not granted to other states which allowed the Palestinian Authority to participate in certain voting procedures in the General Assembly and join some UN agencies.

A full UN membership would grant the Palestinians an official acknowledgement of an independent state that they want to establish along the 1967 border with East Jerusalem as its capital.
