Hyderabad 30 Aug : Four women have died because of complications the procedure Double Puncture Laparoscopy (DPL) in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district, officials informed.The procedure was carried out at the female sterilization camp held on the 25th of August at Civil Hospital in Ibrahimpatnam in the district.
They were suffering of acute gastroenteritis, and died while receiving treatment.Two deaths were reported on Tuesday bringing the death number to four.
According to Director of Public Health Dr G.Srinivasa Rao Dr G.Srinivasa Rao, 34 women were treated in the hospital.As 30 women were released four were found to be suffering of acute gastroenteritis.
They sought out private hospitals to seek treatment.
All four women died while receiving treatment.
Taken note of the incident the Health Department has placed the Chief of Civil Hospital under lifetime suspension.Rao said that the doctors who performed the operation have been temporarily suspended.
The state government has ordered an inquiry led by the Director of Public Health.He said that although the condition of thirty women seemed to be stable, a few of were transferred to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad as a precautionary measure.
Doctors were keeping an eye on the patients.
Rao explained that the sterilization camp is a routine exercise where DPL tubectomy, vasectomy and DPL procedures are performed.”Experienced doctors perform the procedures.This incident is a freak accident.
We are working to figure the causes that led to this tragic incident” he said.
According to the official, DPL is a preferred procedure for women who desire permanent sterilization with little or no complications.
Women who have DPL are discharged the same day and return to their daily activities immediately.
The state government declared an ex-gratia of 5 lakh rupees and two bed-room homes to the family of the deceased.
Children who survive of those who died will be allowed to enroll in the residential school of their choice.
In the meantime the State Human Rights Commission has taken note of the incident.
It has directed Ranga Reddy, the district collector to take stern actions against those found to be negligent and to submit a full report within 10 days of October.
