San Francisco, Sep 1 : Tech giant Apple might utilize “hybrid” OLED technology, that combines flexible and rigid OLED panel materials in the context of its rumored plans to change to OLED technology for its upcoming iPad models. The tech giant isn’t ready to rely only on the pliable OLED technology it uses in its iPhone models, as OLED panels are known to “crumple” and the effect becomes more apparent as displays grow larger, MacRumors reported citing The Elec.
“When it was revealed that Apple plans to use hybrid OLED to the first OLED iPad, the industry has assumed the reason was cost savings,” the report said.
It is also understood that there’s a reason Apple prefers hybrid OLED in addition to the cost reduction.
A representative from the industry of parts said: “Apple hated the fact that a portion of the product’s screen could appear wrinkled to eye of the user with OLEDs that are flexible.
“iPhone OLED comes with a screen of 5-7 inches This means that these features aren’t well-known however it is obvious in larger-screen (10-20 inches) IT devices.”
The hybrid OLED technology is yet to be perfected , it will require at least one year to be economically viable before it can be integrated in an OLED iPad in 2024, the report stated that both Samsung as well as LG are looking at ultra-thin glass substrates of only 0.2 millimeters thick that could be utilized with the tech, which is a reduction from the current norm of approximately 0.5 millimeters.
