Belgrade 22 August : Serbia will use the next 10 days to look for the best compromise solution in an ongoing dispute with Kosovo regarding travel and car registrations in Northern Kosovo, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic declared in an event for journalists.Vucic who addressed people for the first time on Sunday since an unsuccessful EU-mediated Belgrade-Pristina dialog in Brussels Vucic was also adamant that Serbia will defend its citizens from persecution if NATO does not, Xinhua news agency reported.
“NATO’s responsibility is to safeguard Serbian citizens in Kosovo.to prevent Kosovo Police from crossing the Ibar river,” the President added in his statement, accusing Pristina of instabilizing the situation by using every chance to dispatch Kosovo Police into Serbian neighborhoods.
“We will defend our people from pogroms and persecution should NATO does not assist,” he said.
He cautioned that the main motive of the Pristina authorities is to oppress the remainder of the Serbian population and strip what is left of Serbian sovereign status in Kosovo.
He said that during last week’s talks in Brussels, “.all of our constructive suggestions were rejected (by Pristina) in an almost comical manner”.
Kosovo independently declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 when it declared its independence from Serbia.Serbia is opposed and considers Kosovo as its own province.
Tensions resurfaced in the last few weeks in northern Kosovo because of Pristina’s announcement that it would prohibit Serbian car license plates as well as travel documents on its territory.
On July 31st the On July 31, Serbs in the northern part of Kosovo shut down roads and built bars to protest Kosovo’s move to require them to use the vehicle license plates that were issued in Pristina.
Kosovo later opted to recognize Serbian issued license plates and other documents up to the close of August.
